Local SEO in Brussels: being visible across the 19 municipalities, in French and Dutch
Google profile, keywords by municipality and language, reviews, Belgian directories: the method to appear on Google when your Brussels customers are looking for you.

Brussels is a local market like no other. One city, nineteen municipalities with very different identities, two official languages, a large international population searching in English, and customers who type “Ixelles” or “Elsene” interchangeably. For a Brussels business, local SEO isn’t just about adding “Brussels” to your titles.
Understanding how your customers search
- By municipality or neighbourhood: “dentist Uccle”, “restaurant Châtelain”, “real estate agency Woluwe”.
- In their own language: “kinésithérapeute Etterbeek”, “kinesitherapeut Etterbeek” and “physiotherapist Etterbeek” are three distinct searches.
- With bilingual names: Saint-Gilles and Sint-Gillis, Ixelles and Elsene, Bruxelles and Brussel. Google often links them, but not always.
- “Near me”: the user’s location then does all the work, and it’s your Google profile that’s at stake.
Start by listing your customers’ real searches in each language. Our method for finding the right local keywords applies to Brussels, provided you repeat it for each target language.
1. Your Google Business Profile, the top priority
For any local search, the Google map appears before the standard results. In Brussels as elsewhere, a complete profile makes the difference: a precise primary category, exact address, up-to-date opening hours, real photos, described services and regular posts. Our guide to the Google Business Profile covers every setting.
2. A well-structured multilingual website
If your customers search in French and Dutch, you need a real page in each language, with its own address, not a translation displayed by a JavaScript button. Hreflang tags tell Google which version to show to whom. Everything is explained in our article on the multilingual website in Brussels.
3. Pages for your key municipalities
If you work in several municipalities, one page per important area can help you rank locally, provided it offers specific content: local projects, response times, neighbourhood specifics, testimonials from customers in the area. Duplicating the same page and changing only the municipality name is counterproductive.
4. Customer reviews
The number, rating and freshness of your reviews influence your ranking on the map. Ask for them systematically after a successful job, by text message or email with the direct link. Our method to get more Google reviews still applies, adapting the messages to each customer’s language.
5. Belgian directories and networks
Your contact details must be identical everywhere: website, Google profile, directories, social media. For links and citations, favour genuinely Belgian sources:
- general and professional Belgian directories, such as the Golden Pages;
- your professional federation and, where applicable, your professional order;
- Brussels business organisations and chambers of commerce;
- the retailers’ associations in your municipality;
- local press and neighbourhood media, in French and in Dutch.

6. International customers
Expats, EU officials, foreign companies: a large share of Brussels customers search in English. For some sectors (health, real estate, legal, food service, business services), a polished English version can be a real competitive advantage, because many competitors don’t have one.
Measuring results
In Search Console, filter your performance by country (Belgium) and by page in each language. In your Google profile, track calls, direction requests and clicks to your website. These figures show which language and which municipality bring in the most.
