Shopify or WooCommerce: which platform for your online store?

Real costs, simplicity, SEO, scalability, maintenance: the honest comparison between Shopify and WooCommerce to choose the right e-commerce platform.

They’re the two most widely used solutions for creating an online store in France. Shopify is a turnkey platform, WooCommerce an e-commerce plugin for WordPress. Both make for great stores, but they don’t suit the same businesses. Here’s an unbiased comparison, even if we have our preferences.

The principle of each solution

Shopify is an online service: you pay a monthly subscription, and Shopify takes care of hosting, security, updates and payments. WooCommerce is free and open source, but it’s installed on a WordPress website that you have to host, secure and maintain yourself or through your provider.

The real cost

WooCommerce is often presented as free. That’s true for the plugin, not for the store. Let’s compare what you really have to pay:

  • Shopify: a monthly subscription from around thirty euros, transaction fees on payments, and a few paid apps depending on your needs.
  • WooCommerce: high-performance hosting, a premium theme, paid plugins (shipping, subscriptions, filters), Stripe or PayPal payment fees, and above all regular technical maintenance.
  • In both cases: building the store, product photography and content are the biggest investment.

Ease of use

Shopify is designed for retailers: adding a product, managing an order, creating a discount code or printing a shipping label can be done without training. WooCommerce takes more getting used to, because each feature depends on a different plugin, with its own interface.

Maintenance and security

This is the point that most often tips the balance. With WooCommerce, WordPress, the theme and the plugins must be updated regularly, and an update can sometimes break the store. With Shopify, the platform handles all of this for you. For a small business without a technical team, it’s a decisive argument.

SEO

Both allow for very good SEO. WooCommerce offers more freedom (URL structure, full control of the code), Shopify imposes certain conventions but starts from a sound, fast technical base. In both cases, it’s mainly content quality and speed that make the difference: see our Shopify SEO guide.

Features and scalability

  • Selling in a physical shop: Shopify POS syncs stock and customers with the online store. A real asset for retailers.
  • International: Shopify Markets handles currencies, languages and taxes by country.
  • Very specific needs: complex configurators, unusual pricing rules, deep ERP integration. WooCommerce offers more freedom, and Shopify can also be extended through custom development.
  • High volumes: Shopify absorbs traffic peaks effortlessly; WooCommerce requires hosting sized accordingly.

Our recommendation

Choose Shopify if…

  • you want to focus on selling, not on technology;
  • you also have a physical shop;
  • you’re targeting several countries;
  • you’re planning rapid growth.

Choose WooCommerce if…

  • your WordPress website is already at the heart of your business, with lots of content;
  • you sell few products, alongside a showcase website;
  • you have a provider who handles maintenance over the long term.

And if neither fits, a custom store remains possible for very particular needs. Our comparison WordPress, Wix, Shopify or custom details these options. For brands that want to go further without leaving Shopify, there’s also headless with Next.js.

Migrating from WooCommerce to Shopify

It’s a frequent request. Products, customers and order history can be transferred, but the migration must be prepared so you don’t lose your SEO: URL mapping, redirects, content checks. We detail every step in our guide to migrating your store to Shopify, and the SEO principles in the article redesigning your website without losing your SEO.
