How long does it take to rank well on Google?

Indexing, first rankings, lasting results: realistic organic SEO timelines, what speeds them up and what slows them down.

It’s the question almost all our clients ask, and that’s normal: SEO is an investment, and you want to know when it will pay off. The honest answer is “it depends”, but we can give reliable orders of magnitude and, above all, explain what makes these timelines vary.

The three stages of SEO

1. Indexing: a few days to a few weeks

Google first has to discover your pages and add them to its index. For a well-built new website, submitted in Search Console with a sitemap, this generally takes from a few days to a few weeks. Being indexed doesn’t mean ranking well: it only means you can appear.

2. First rankings: one to three months

Your pages start to appear for precise, low-competition queries: your name, your service combined with your neighbourhood, specific questions covered on your blog. That’s when the first contact requests arrive.

3. Solid rankings: three to twelve months

For more contested queries, such as a trade combined with “Marseille”, you generally need three to six months of regular work, and sometimes more in the most competitive markets. The rankings achieved are then lasting, provided the website is maintained.

What speeds up SEO

  • An older domain name that already has a history and links.
  • A fast, technically clean website that’s easy for Google to crawl. Our article on SSR and SSG rendering explains why the technology matters.
  • A dedicated page for each service, with complete, useful content.
  • An optimised Google Business Profile: in local SEO, it’s often what produces the first results.
  • Regular customer reviews and links from recognised local websites.
  • Low competition in your niche or your neighbourhood.

What slows it down

  • A slow, poorly structured website, or one built entirely in client-side JavaScript.
  • Short, generic text or text copied from other websites.
  • A redesign carried out without redirects, losing the history you’d built up.
  • A very competitive sector, up against national players and directories.
  • One-off work that then stops: SEO is built over time.

Example timelines by situation

  • Tradesperson in a Marseille neighbourhood: first enquiries via the Google map within a few weeks, solid rankings in three to six months.
  • Business with a specific offer: quick on precise queries, longer on generic terms.
  • National online store: six to twelve months to compete with major retailers on broad categories.
  • Lawyer or real estate agency in the city centre: competitive sectors, allow six months or more for the main queries.

SEO or advertising in the meantime?

If you need customers right away, Google Ads can take over while organic search ramps up. We compare the two approaches in our article SEO or Google Ads: where to start?.

How to measure progress

Even before gaining rankings, several indicators show that the work is paying off: impressions in Search Console increase, new queries appear, the average position improves. Clicks and contacts then follow. Also track calls and direction requests from your Google profile.
